How Many People See It

A wide variety of very popular billboard advertisements

Billboards have long been a suitable choice for outdoor advertising. They are placed throughout cities to engage people that may need the noted services. There are a countless number of people passing these ads on a regular basis. Or so we thought. There is actually an answer to the question of how many people see a billboard.

There are several agencies that work to assess how many people see billboards. They employ tracking services that measure the amount of vehicles that pass these ads in a given day. We break down some of the ones referenced by Bill below!

Tracking Services

Bill noted a tracking service respective to Atlanta called Geopath. It’s actually an updated version of TAB, the Traffic Audit Bureau. The name change occurred in 2016, but the effort remains the same. Geopath commits to rating and notating available billboard locations.

It is important to note the industry has not escaped the impact of COVID-19. This has translated into the noted tracking efforts. There is a noticeable difference between 2020’s numbers and previous years. Still, outdoor advertising remains a valuable promotional resource for several industries.

Tracking Atlanta’s numbers

Atlanta is an example of an area that pulls in big traffic for billboard holders. “In Atlanta, it’s going to be between 100,000 people a week to three million people a week” that see a billboard. Those are eyes that could be on your brand today!

Hi, I’m Jason Sirotin, And today I’m speaking with Bill Hobbs, who is the owner and proprietor, managing director, everything of Effortless Outdoor Media, which is a outdoor media advertising placement company. How many people will see a billboard? I know that’s kind of a random question, but how do you know?

Bill Hobbs:

Yeah, the number of people that see a billboard is actually, there’s a company called Geopath, and TAB is another one, Traffic Audit Bureau. They actually do research on different roads and how many people drive by billboards. So there’s a exact number for every billboard. And it usually, for example, in Atlanta, it’s going to be between 100,000 people a week to three million people a week will drive by and see the billboard. And the great thing about the impressions with outdoor is that if you look at the impressions, let’s say, for radio advertising, they do a ratings book. In the impressions you’re counted as a listener if you listen to a station for one hour, anytime during a week. With billboards, the impressions for billboards is a much more accurate number, because it’s actually … The people are driving by on that road where the billboard is located. So the cost per thousand on billboards is doing much less than other advertising.
