A wide variety of very popular billboard advertisements

There are a couple of options when it comes to choosing your next billboard. These options each come with their own further consideration. Static billboards, for example, are made of vinyl and are unchanging. That means once your billboard is up, that’s what it’s going to look like for its entire lifetime. Any changes made during its life cycle will result in extra fees. But what about the disadvantages of digital?

Likewise, your digital billboard options come with their own set of pros and cons. This is the option that most advertisers will recommend to their clients. But does that mean it’s not without its setbacks? Read on to learn more.

The setbacks of digital billboards

One of the reasons most advertisers advocate for this option is because of the number of ads that can go on it. When it’s a static billboard, you’re the main attraction. But on digital billboards, you’re sharing the space with eight other hopefuls.

This doesn’t mean come without drawbacks for the static option. Because of its exclusivity, it may result in the billboard being “sold out in certain areas.” If it’s a high traffic or highly coveted area, the chances of it being occupied are much, much higher.

Of course, this doesn’t mean that digital options are a lost cause. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. It for sure has its positives. All this really means is that you have to be a little more diligent when choosing your selection. Weigh everything out, and decide what works best for your brand.

Hi, I’m Jason Sirotin, and today I’m speaking with Bill Hobbs, who is the owner and proprietor, managing director, everything, of Effortless Outdoor Media, which is a outdoor media advertising placement company.

What are the disadvantages to using a digital billboard?

Bill Hobbs:

The disadvantage is, for a digital billboard, and this is why most people who call me want a digital billboard. However, it’s not always the best option. The disadvantage of a digital billboard is, number one, you’re up there with eight advertisers. Where a static billboard, you’re up there a hundred percent of the time. I will tell you, the outdoor companies normally will push digital billboards, because they always have much more space available on digital board, because there’s eight ads. Where static billboards, a lot of times they may be sold out in certain areas. If they know that, if you call, they’ll push a digital billboard, because that’s what they have available. Digital has certain points that make it effective for certain types of advertising, but it’s not what everybody should do.
